Don’t despair; it happens to us all the time. But there are plenty of ways to get ideas for your writing. All it takes is a little attention to what’s going on around you. Here are some great places to get inspiration.
1. Read other blogs – This may seem obvious but keeping up to date with other blogs in your industry is great for several reasons. First of all, it will help you see trends in the industry – and you may want to take advantage of these trends by writing about them in your blog. In addition, it may help you find out about new products you want to carry or other things that can help your business.
The easiest way to do this is by grabbing their RSS feed and saving it with Google Reader as that is free and everyone uses it. Look at the ‘iGoogle’ option in the top right corner of your Google homepage.
If you do this well, others will take your RSS and use you for inspiration as time goes on!
2. Keep up with the news – Writing about current events, particularly when they relate in some way to your business or products is not only a great way to stay fresh and current with your readers, it’s also a great way to stay in the search engines.
Search engines will grab right onto a blog post that uses words that are also found in the most recent headlines. In addition to looking at the national news for inspiration, don’t forget to keep up with local news and industry news.
Blogging on local events keeps you tuned into your local buyers, while blogging on industry news helps cement your reputation as an expert in your field.
3. Use reader questions as inspiration – If you’ve received the same question a few times from different readers it’s a blog post topic! You can bet that other readers have the question too, and will appreciate you addressing the topic.
Why not send out a questionnaire and ask your readers what they’d like to be reading about? Use Google Docs forms to create a free questionnaire.
4. Check out your stats – A little analysis of your website’s statistics in Google Analytics can really help you decide what you should be writing about.
By reviewing the keywords that brought visitors to your site, you can determine what keywords are the most popular. If you keep writing to those keywords, adding in a few others as you go, you should continue to attract traffic.
Likewise, take a look at what other sites brought traffic to your site. Review those sites and see where you might be able to even further leverage their readership to increase your own.
I recommend that you also carry a notebook or journal with you every day. Ideas will pop into your head at the most unlikely times and, if you’re anything like me, will be gone by the time you get to write them down later. So, write them down immediately or pop them into Notes on your iPhone.
Bringing readers to your blog is the key to using it to increase your business. With a little time and research on your part, you’ll never run out of inspired blog posts.
